Change to Side Hustles UK tax in 2029? š
Right now, if you owe tax on side income, you can choose to pay it in one go, or spread it interest-free through your PAYE tax code. From 2029, HMRC plans to remove that choice ā automatically adjusting your tax code to take the money straight from your wages instead. In the first year (2029/30), some people could face a "double hit" ā paying off last year's bill and an estimated payment for this year, both at once. Read more here: https://betteraccount.co.uk/p/side-hustles-uk-tax/ š¬ Does this affect your side hustle income? š¬ Would the "double hit" worry your cash flow? Welcome back to another edition of Fan Friday, the series that shines a spotlight on the depth, breadth and brilliance of UK small businesses from within the Enterprise Nation community ⨠This week it's the turn of Belfast-based member Alex Coyle and her business, Cake Eighty Seven. When she first started out, Alex dreamed of creating beautifully bright and glossy cakes that could be posted straight to your door. Two years of "chocolate cracking tantrums, postal disasters, and minor meltdowns", and eighty-seven attempts later, she'd cracked it. Alex now ships her luxury postable cakes across the UK. Read Alex's founder story below & don't forget to leave some love in the comments. ā¤ļø Where did the idea for postable chocolate cakes come from? Over the last few years I became slightly obsessed with chocolate (specifically colourful, glossy chocolate) and wanted to build a product around it. I initially considered chocolate production, but that would have meant a complete shift in business direction. Since I already had experience in cakes, I decided to combine the two and create something entirely new: a cake coated in a hard chocolate shell. I also wanted the business to be scalable, and to be able to sell across the UK rather than just locally. The idea of fitting the cakes neatly into cardboard tubes came later, and thatās really when everything clicked into place. What inspired you to start Cake Eighty Seven? I loved making one-off wedding cakes, but after having two children and life becoming a lot busier (and never being particularly confident about charging properly for my time) I realised I wasnāt earning enough for the hours I was putting in. I wanted to build something more scalable. I also wanted to create my own style of cake that could be ordered easily online. I thought: if you like it, you like it, and if you donāt, you donāt. I liked the idea of removing endless client consultations and small bespoke tweaks, and simplifying things a little. Whatās been the biggest learning curve since launching Cake Eighty Seven? Chocolate. Absolutely chocolate. Itās the reason it took so long to get everything right - tempering, cracked shells, patchy finishes, and mistake after mistake that had to be melted down and started again. Iām very much a āshortcutā person, so learning that this process has to be followed precisely was a big adjustment. On top of that, figuring out packaging, sizing, and all the tiny daily decisions that come with running a product-based business has been overwhelming at times. I always thought Iād have loved someone to guide me through it, but I donāt know anyone who has started an online food business like this, so Iāve had to figure it out as I go. Are there any new flavours, products or ideas youāre excited about? Yes, lots of big ideas for the future, including what I believe could be the first-ever postable tiered wedding cake. Iām really excited about developing that. Longer term, Iād also love to expand into other Cake Eighty Seven-style products, such as chocolate truffles and teacakes. Whatās one thing that keeps you motivated on tough days? Seeing those shiny, colourful cakes come out of the mould never gets old. It always makes me smile and reminds me why I started. Iāve had lots of business ideas over the years, but this is the one thatās truly stuck. Iāve never felt anything other than driven by it, so I just keep going and see where it takes me. We love hearing member success stories, so we were delighted when Matt Dyson got in touch to share some incredible news with the Enterprise Nation community. Nearly a decade after dreaming up an idea to solve a problem faced by one very sleep-deprived family, Matt and his brother-in-law Nick Webb have now sold their one millionth Rockit Rocker ā the portable device designed to help keep babies asleep in their pushchairs. š When Matt gave up his teaching job and ploughed all his savings into making the first 5,000 Rockits, he never dreamed he would reach this stage, describing it as a āreal pinch me momentā. The Bristol-based company, Rockit, was founded in 2016 after engineer Dr Nick Webb became frustrated that his three-month-old daughter Abby would only sleep while her pushchair was moving and, like many parents, he found himself endlessly walking to keep her asleep. Then, one evening, inspiration struck. Nick took apart an old printer, salvaged the motor and soldered together a makeshift device that could gently rock a stationary pushchair. The following day he tested it with Abby. It worked. "She stayed asleep even when the pushchair stopped moving," recalled Webb. "That was the moment I realised I might be onto something.ā Armed with a PhD in vibration and acoustics engineering, Nick teamed up with his brother-in-law Matt Dyson, a former product design teacher to transform the initial prototype into a commercial product. Working part-time they spent the next 18 months refining the idea and securing support from the Design Council before launching the Rockit Rocker in 2017. The hope was Rockit may help a few hundred families. Instead, it took off and within months, the product was being stocked nationwide by major retailers including John Lewis and JoJo Maman BĆ©bĆ©. The success of Rockit enabled the team to own the baby sleep category, and the range expanded with the launch of ZED, a vibration soother and nightlight, and Wooshh, a small but mighty sound soother as well as a rechargeable version of Rockit that hit the market in 2023. Further product introductions are planned, with a significant launch for the Toddler Sleep category planned for July this year. Today, Rockit products are sold in more than 40 countries across Europe, North America, Australia and Asia and the company has won multiple awards for the product range including accolades from Junior Design, Good Housekeeping and Made for Mums to name a few. Like many founders, Matt knows that building a business takes resilience, determination and belief in your idea. As he celebrates this incredible milestone, he shares his advice with the Enterprise Nation community: ā10 years ago my brother-in-law Nick had a lightbulb moment and invented a device to help his daughter sleep in her pushchair. Together we developed the Rockit Rocker in his shed with the aim to try and turn it into a commercial product. Fast forward to 2026 and we have to pinch ourselves as we have just sold our millionth Rockit worldwide. To all the budding entrepreneurs out there, if you have an idea that solves a real problem and thereās a clear gap in the market, donāt let people put you off. We ignored the naysayers, remained positive and focused on making Rockit a successā. āA question for the community: did your business begin with a problem to solve? Enterprise Nation's Fan Friday! š Hedi & Mark Fountain
Welcome back to another edition of Fan Friday, the series that shines a spotlight on the depth, breadth and brilliance of UK small businesses from within the Enterprise Nation community āØ
This week, we sat down with member Hedi Fountain, co-founder of City Space, an all-in-one studio space for creatives, brands, and businesses based in Chelmsford, Essex, which she runs alongside her husband Mark.Ā
Building a business with your partner can bring its own unique challenges, but for those considering taking the leap, Hedi shares her perspective on making it work:
ā...Play to each other's strengths rather than trying to do the same job. Mark and I have different skill sets, and that's one of the reasons it works so well. Be honest, respect each other's opinions, and remember that your relationship is more important than any business decision.āĀ
Found out more about City Space below & don't forget to leave some love in the comments. š«¶Ā
What is City Space? And how do people use it?
City Space is a creative photography and video studio with a full studio set up, 2 content areas, glam are and a podcast room. We are also fully licensed with strong Ā barista coffee, aircon and WIFI. When clients are not using to create content we hire it out as an event space. So people use it for all sorts of things ā from content creation days, podcasts and training sessions, to workshops, networking events, product launches, and small corporate gatherings. We also see a lot of photographers, coaches, and brands using it for shoots and experiential events where they want more control over the environment.Ā
What makes it different is that itās built for creativity and flexibility. Itās not a āone size fits allā space ā it adapts to the vision of whoever walks through the door and we absolutely love it!Ā
What inspired you to create City Space?Ā
We wanted something that would compliment our video production business but could be also really benefit the local community and something I could run without needing Mark. There is not like this in Essex, so we thought why not!Ā
Experiential venuesĀ like City Space are becoming increasingly popular -Ā what do you think is driving that?Ā
I think people are looking for more than just four walls and a few chairs. Whether it's an event, a workshop, a networking meeting, or a content creation day, people want an experience that feels memorable and engaging.Ā
The way we work has changed dramatically over the last few years. More people are working remotely, running their own businesses, and building personal brands. They're looking for spaces that inspire creativity, encourage collaboration, and help them stand out.Ā
We're also seeing businesses move away from traditional corporate environments and towards venues that feel more authentic and flexible. They want spaces where they can connect with clients, bring teams together, create content, and host events that people genuinely enjoy attending.Ā
What'sĀ itĀ likeĀ buildingĀ aĀ businessĀ with your husband?Ā Do you have anyĀ adviceĀ for membersĀ who areĀ considering starting a ventureĀ together?Ā
I genuinely love working with Mark. We share the same level of commitment, passion, and drive, and there's a huge amount of trust between us. When you're building a business, there are lots of ups and downs, and knowing that you're completely aligned on the bigger picture makes a massive difference.Ā
Of course, it's not always perfect! We definitely argue ā usually about finances rather than the creative side of the business. And if I'm honest, we're probably guilty of never really switching off. Even on date nights we'll find ourselves talking about Ā clients, ideas, events, marketing, or the next opportunity. We literally live and breathe the business.Ā
For anyone considering starting a venture with their partner, my advice would be to play to each other's strengths rather than trying to do the same job. Mark and I have different skill sets, and that's one of the reasons it works so well. Be honest, respect each other's opinions, and remember that your relationship is more important than any business decision. Remember the woman is always right! Mark always says he wears the pants, but I tell him which ones.Ā
What kind of people walk through your doors?Ā Is there a typical City Space client?Ā
Honestly, there really isn't a typical City Space client, and that's one of the things I love most about it.Ā
For example this week we hosted a women's networking event, then had an insurance professional hiring the studio to create content for his business. Yesterday someone hired it for run a first aid training course, and this weekend we're hosting the launch party for a fitness app created by a local personal trainer.Ā
No two days are ever the same, and that's exactly how we designed City Space to be.Ā
What'sĀ next for City Space - anything exciting in the pipeline?Ā Ā
One of the things weāre really excited about is our content area upstairs on the mezzanine level. We change it every three months, so people can come back regularly and always have a completely different backdrop and feel for their content shoots. It keeps things creative and gives businesses a reason to return again and again.Ā
Weāre also looking at expanding what we offer even further with a āhire it allā option. The idea is that clients wonāt just have access to the space, lighting, and backdrops, but also cameras and lenses as part of their hire. It means people wonāt need to rely on just their phones ā they can step into a fully equipped creative studio and produce high-quality content, even if they donāt have their own gearĀ
See you next week for another Fan Friday! š«¶

Hi, any tutors, freelance teachers, trainers or those otherwise engaged in education out there? Would love to form a subgroup for mutual support, ideas, successes and lessons learned. Is your packaging costing you more than it should?
Packaging is often one of those areas that businesses only review when there is a problem ā damaged goods, rising courier costs, poor presentation, storage issues, or pressure to use more sustainable materials. In many cases, small changes can make a real difference. Using the right size box, reducing unnecessary void fill, improving product protection, or switching to a more suitable material can help reduce waste, improve the customer experience, and sometimes lower overall costs. A useful starting point is to ask: ⢠Is the packaging the right size for the product? ⢠Is it protecting the product properly in storage and transit? ⢠Could material use be reduced without affecting performance? ⢠Does it suit the way the product is sold ā e-commerce, retail, fulfilment, or direct delivery? ⢠Does it reflect the quality and values of the brand? At Kingscroft Logistics Ltd, we regularly help businesses look at these questions and identify practical improvements to their packaging. We would be happy to offer Enterprise Nation members an initial packaging review and share some ideas on where improvements may be possible. Has anyone reviewed their packaging recently and found a simple change that made a big difference? Your Small Business Wins š
